The Campo di Mare Occhinese is a private three-acre seafront estate in an awesome natural mountain amphitheatre sweeping down to the warm waters of the Gulf of Saint Florent: panoramic views over the property to the sea and across the bay to the lovely citadel-port of Saint Florent.
The property is located off a very quiet country lane-an extension of a narrow seafront road: high gates open onto a long drive meandering up through the property past giant eucalyptus and cypresses to extensive parking under the shade of enormous Eucalyptus trees discreetly to the rear of the villa.
A short walk takes one to steps down to little courtyard in front of the main entry to the villa
The villa (4 000SF) has been built in dry stone-inspired by the original Corsican shepherds' houses in the maquis - and is perfectly integrated into the hillside and almost not visible from most of the grounds: sober architecture with walls the colour of Corsican earth.
Double doors open into a long entry hall-cum-living area (900SF): office; home cinema; sitting area with club chairs in front of a stone fireplace; and a library with baby grand piano - from the library end, a corridor leads to three bedrooms and a second living area.
The second living area - over 450SF - comprises a formal dining area with table for eleven, fully-equipped semi-professional kitchen with large back kitchen, and a conservatory-style living room with garden access: the dining room and living room have good sea views.
The three bedrooms are: double bedroom wrought-iron four-poster bed, fireplace, archway to tiny seating area with French windows to the garden, and an ensuite bathroom - in-bath shower - with separate WC; double bedroom with wrought-iron bed seating area - no garden access - and an ensuite shower bathroom with walk-in shower and dark marble washbasin; double bedroom with white wood bed, French windows to the garden and a large bathroom with corner bath and separate WC.
The fourth and fifth bedrooms are off a short hall access from the first living area: expansive bedroom master bedroom with a high beamed white ceiling, wrought-iron double bed, French windows to the garden, a curtained-off bathroom with foot-and-claw bath - in-bath shower - and a retro-style washbasin; second master bedroom with high beamed white ceiling, fireplace, seating area with sea views and garden access, wrought-iron Spanish-style double bed, and an extra ordinary Gaudi-style bathroom with a cascade-filled black bath - in-bath shower, and a separate WC.
All the bedrooms are between around 170SF and 210SF and have custom-made beds created by a talented artist as well as unique state-of-the-art bathrooms.
A small hammam and a massage room can be accessed from the corridor leading to the second living area.
The décor is mainly off-white floor tiles, white walls, and high ceilings and the furnishings are an eclectic blend of modern, antique, and custom-made pieces enhanced by unique artwork and subtle lighting: sculpture, fine prints and host of quite unique decorative features combine to create a wonderful summer atmosphere with light, colour, and sea views everywhere.
The villa is very well equipped with good dinnerware, cutlery, glasses, and fine household linen; stereo system, satellite TV, DVD player, telefax, and internet connectivity are among the many features of this award-winning Mediterranean home.
The full staff is included in the rent: estate manager who lives in a separate cottage; cleaning lady; cook; chef specialised in cooking meat or fish over a wood fire; skipper for the 9-person traditional Corsican wooden "pointu" and Windy 24.
The extensive Mediterranean garden sweeps down to the sea and features lawns, cypresses, olive trees, giant eucalyptus, and old stone walls as well as many flowers and many wild herbs.
The raised swimming pool area - beautiful views of the bay and Saint Florent - comprises: 35-foot infinity pool with paved sunbathing areas on three sides; cover al fresco dining area for 8-10; very large pool house with bar, piano, and two dining areas for up to twenty. .
At a slightly lower level, there is a covered seating, breakfast, and dining area with splendid sea views.
Just to stroll or relax for a few hours in this haven of peace and beauty calms the mind and restores one's equilibrium: to stay on vacation is a great pleasure for a privileged few.with sea swimming just two minutes walk through the grounds.
A typical day at the estate is leisurely and quite unhurried: breakfast out on the al-fresco dining terrace; a trip down the coast in the estate pointu motorboat for sea swimming possibly a picnic around the totally unspoilt bays and coves of the nearby Desert des Agriates; back home for a light lunch washed down with Corsican rosé from one of the local Patrimono estates; afternoons spent sunbathing, swimming in the pool, painting or writing under an olive tree away from the villa.
For the active: afternoon waterskiing, diving or sailing at the Ecole de Voile nearby; early evening shopping in the chic boutiques at Saint Florent village.
In addition to maritime excursions, a helicopter direct from the property can take guests for a "peasant lunch" in a traditional stone-built farm in the maquis-covered hills or, off-season, for wild boar hunting.
Dinner is usually taken at the villa-either in the formal dining room or outside by the pool with enchanting views: as night draws in, the sublime silhouette of the mountains and hills of Patrimono behind Saint Florent gives way to the twinkling lights of the port.
Easy conversation-animated by the events of the day or, for the younger ones, inspired by the coming evening in the social bars, quayside cafés, and nightclubs of Saint Florent-animates a simple but delightful dinner prepared by the estate's cook with local fresh fish, vegetables and fruit.
Campo di Mare Occhinese can be reached by car or helicopter -just 25 minutes from Bastia international airport with 3-4 hour connections to Paris and London-is ideal for a family or small corporate group seeking total peace and absolute privacy in one of the world's most beautiful venues.
