Villa holidays in Portugal
Despite its relatively small size, Portugal is one of Europe’s heavyweights when it comes to holidays. A stunningly beautiful country, green and mountainous to the north and east, golden and sandy to the south and west, it combines an emerging modernity with a deep-rooted, traditional way of life belonging to centuries past. From the shabby chic and old-fashioned charm of the capital Lisbon, through the cork and almond forests and olive groves of Alentejo, to the miles and miles of sandy coastline of the Algarve, Portugal fully justifies its standing as one of the most popular travel destinations in Europe.
The intrepid city explorer will find much to admire amongst the cobbled streets of cosmopolitan Lisbon, with its castles, museums, impossible hills, dramatic views and vibrant energy. A journey inland will find a sleepy, laid-back country seemingly unaffected by centuries of change around it, nowhere more so than the Alentejo region, with small, ancient villages dotted around its otherwise beautifully untouched countryside. The way of life here dates back through generations, and the region remains largely undiscovered and full of surprise and discovery.
For the would-be holiday maker, the jewel in Portugal’s not inconsiderable crown must surely be the paradise of The Algarve. Mile upon mile of stunning coastline, the best beaches anywhere in Europe, the most annual sunshine hours in Europe (roughly 300 days of sunshine a year), deliciously fresh seafood, world-class golf courses…the list goes on and on.
A perfect place to take the family for a relaxing, sun-filled holiday, be it on the beach, the golf course, or just on the sun-lounger next to the pool in one of the stunning Portugal villas on offer in the area. For those who prefer things a little more remote, the fishing village of Sagres on the south west tip of Portugal retains a lot of its old charm. This was once thought to be the very edge of the world and was the last stop for the seafaring explorers off to discover the new world. It is also a surfer’s paradise due to the large breakers coming in from the Atlantic and the remote, quiet beaches. Nearer to the region’s capital, Faro, are the luxury resorts and golfing havens of Quinto Do Lago and Vilamoura. Not that it all need be about beaches and golf courses – a short drive north into the countryside will find an abundance of natural beauty and wonder. The Serra de Monchique provides ideal hiking country and is home to the highest mountain peak of southern Portugal, whilst the ancient spa town of nearby Monchique provides a great day out for the family with quality restaurants and spectacular views.
